What Is Malaria?
Malaria is a severe and at times, a fatal illness which is triggered by a parasite that usually infects a female Anopheles mosquito. When this infected mosquito bites humans, the disease is transferred into the blood of humans. Patients can experience symptoms like high temperature, shivering chills, and other flu-like symptoms.
Of the many possible health benefits that this herb can provide, being an anti-malarial natural remedy is worth taking into account. This illness brings along a lot of accompanying issues. Hence a lot of different types of medications are prescribed by the doctor to gain relief from all of the problems. Fortunately, instead, we have an all-in-one natural remedy to treat most of the accompanying issues. Kratom’s properties have been identified long back and hence has been used by many tribal and ancient people to treat malaria. The various alkaloids act together to provide a synergistic relieving effect.
The alkaloid which is responsible for the anti-malarial property of this herb is:
- Mitragynine: This is an Indole alkaloid that is abundant in Kratom. It comprises about 66% of the leaf’s alkaloid content. It can deliver the properties like painkilling, adrenergic, anti-tussive, anti-diarrheal, anti-malarial and also a potential hallucinogenic (5-HT2A) antagonistic property to the herb.
To prove the experimental basis of this property of kratom, various studies have been carried out in the lab. The inhibitory effect of the herb on the parasite was proved using a blood smear of the patient and later examining it under the microscope. This result was also confirmed using an enzyme assay called the PLDH assay, wherein the intensity of the color is directly proportional to the number of parasites present.
These ancient and modern day scientific basis are enough to state that Kratom is an anti-malarial herb safely.
